Guest lecture from Mike and Ben at Ludicology was very insightful into the research process of design. Ludicology is a company based on children’s play. Researching the different elements of play and creating play settings. They’re both members of the children’s workforce advocates of children’s rights and voice. As designers the research process is critical for a successful design. That research helps avoid an unconscious bias that a designer may have and to always research the voice of the target market. We were asked to work in groups on a project set by themselves. The subject that I chose was “design a multi-functional indoor space that can be used as an art workshop/performances and children’s play sessions.” I realised to do this successfully I needed more information on the size of the space I had to work with, the ergonomics of the design in order to cater for it’s range of audience; or was it purely for children? I couldn’t simply design this product without knowing my research first, and I think that was the point of the exercise. To show the importance of research. It gave me a lot to think about and consider when making my own designs.
