They worked in other areas before starting the business 23 years ago. Steve taught photography. They started as educators not selling photographs before they got a break. First big job was at Liverpool stadium. They had a portfolio of personal and professional work and were able to take it to other people. It gave companies an idea of what their work was about and gave them confidence they could do the job. They sought contacts to find work and talk to people to get more work. Not only relying on existing contacts but having the initiative to seek out people. Make yourself as visible as possible, beyond how everyone else is getting noticed. They worked in urban and countryside/landscape location-based photography. Establishing relationships with people with people that commission the work. What I have taken away from Steve and Stephanie is the communication side of business. To show initiative and push myself forward with my work to try gain commission from employers. To build a good example of work on my website. For example I could include my photography and furniture work to showcase more than product design.
